“To do big jumps with small pouch”

Under this motto you can define my Australia round trip. I wanted to see as much as possible with little money. As student I hat to calculate exactly and most the time it works. I hat a budget of 4.346 € (about 8.500 German marks) and finally it was really enough.

Shopping

Nowhere in the world shopping is cheaper than in my birthplace Dortmund (Germany)! Ok, there are countries in which you can buy even cheaper, but that are mostly articles of less quality or forged ones. If you make a reasonable comparison (for example proprietary articles) Germany comes off very well.

In Australia the shopping-prices are acceptable too. But you should buy your food in bigger cities, especially if you plan to visit the outback. In Shopping-Arcades, which are very popular in Australia, you'll find a cheap supermarket like Woolworth, Cooles, Kmart or Franklins. Aldi has opened some branches shortly, where you can buy food very cheap.

If you want to buy souvenirs: you shouldn't buy them in the first shop that comes along! You'll get postcards and other souvenirs also in supermarkets. Cheap Shirts (from AU$ 5) are offered everywhere, but take care: after first washing you can throw them away! Genuine Australian Souvenirs, like Boomerangs and Aborigine-Souvenirs you'll get nearly everywhere in Australia, so you needn't buy them in so-called cultural parks.

Money

Monetary unit is the Australian Dollar (AU$). The rate of exchange amounts to: one Australian Dollar = 0,64 € (1,25 DM are about AU$ 1).

Nearly everywhere it is possible to pay non-cash. Credit cards and ec-cards are accepted. For renting a car or a motor home a credit card is mostly necessary.

We paid mostly with credit card, because it's the cheapest possibility. In payment with credit-card you'll have to pay only 1% for paying in a foreign country - nothing more. No further exchanging-fees. Nevertheless you will need at least a little cash-money, which you should take with you in form of traveller-cheques. Attention! Don't exchange your cheques at the airport, but for examples at a branch of "American Express" (Sydney: at the Circular Quay), where you don't have to pay fees.

Link-tips: booking reasonable flights

A flight to Australia takes a long time and belongs to the main expenses of an Australia-trip (in my case the costs for the flight amounted to 23 % of all costs!). You can save much money if you compare the fares of different airlines. In my opinion a cheaper flight with an stop in an interesting city is better than an expensive non-stop-flight. I flew with Malaysia Airlines, because this airline was the cheapest one, which flies to Cairns and Darwin.

Boing 747

a landing Boing 747-400 of Qantas*

In the following section I'll list some interesting Web-sites for you, where you can book cheap flights. You always should compare the cheapest fare of an internet-provider with an offer of a travel agency! In my case the travel agency was cheaper than the cheapest internet-provider.

Because of the long duration of a flight to Australia, you should also pay attention to the comfort and security of an airline. The german periodical "fliegen & sparen" compares 97 airlines with regard to comfort. Test your favourite airline: "97 Airlines in comparison" (German language).
